  • Setting up multi-zone PA system using extension port

The PA port on the ShoreTel switch works great. The one limitation is that you can only use one port per site. Having had a couple of customers request multi-zone paging, I found the Valcom 9970 very easy to install and has been very reliable.

The setup is easy - Create a user and assign to an analog port.. Don't forget to set call stack to 1. Once created you will want to put an analog phone on the port and make a phone call or two, this will set the echo level on the line.

Mount the Valcom 9970 to the wall. I did have to get a power supply from Radio Shack for the unit. Connect the PA connection to the Valcom unit. Plug your analog extension into unit.

That is it. You will need one unit for every zone you create.

Any comments that I make are purely my opinion. I am not a ShoreTel employee and do not represent them in any way, other then loving the product. Any advise that I may give is to be used at your own risk, I can not take responsibility for any harm that my come from your decision to use my advise.

Thank you for the app note advise....I do not think everyone that has access to this site has access to the ShoreTel support site, hence no access to the app notes.

      Thanks.

        Crack open an IP 110...

If you don't want to occupy a whole port for an analog connection you can simply crack open a IP 110 and wire the speaker into an paging system amplifier. Since you can page over the IP 110 it works like a charm.

Shoretel should offer an IP paging device that works like this in my opinion. You can use it with paging groups and have yourself unlimited paging zones. The only downfall is you do have to pay for the 110 and for an extension only license for the system for each one you do this with. You don't need to use up a full port though as it counts as an IP phone.
