  • Mgcp Ata

I'm doing my fist Shoretel install (God help me). Customer will have PRI with no analog trunks whatsoever and does not want to too use the analog capability of the shoregear switch. That leaves ATAs. I know Shoretel approves of the Mediatrix device but als this is a SIP device and would use 5X of the rsources of a MGCP device. Does anyone have any experience using a MGCP ATA to make a fax machine work? I'm spcifically looking at this device http://store.voipwarehouse.com/produ...4&cat=0&page=1

Analog devices are a part of every installation. The customer should expect this.
1 DSP chip can handle 1 Analog device, 5 MGCP streams OR 5 SIP streams. How many analog devices do you need to connect?

not many but it's new building and they are not running any separate telephone cable or making any allowances for anything other than IP devices or ATAs.
When you say 5 "SIP streams" are you saying that a SIP ATA will only take up 1 DSP resource and not 5 like a analog device would?

Since it is a new building and they are only running network cabling, it would make sense to wire the Shoregear switch amphenol connector into a Cat5 patch panel, just in case they change their mind about analog. We did this at one of our new buildings and it makes it very easy to add an analog device at any network drop (assuming that all drops feed to the main wiring closet where the Shoregear switch is).

          A 40/8 has 8 DSP chips. A 60/12 has 12 DSP's, and a 120/24 has 24 DSP Chips.

1 DSP chip can support one of the following:
          5 IP phones
          1 Conference port
          1 Analog port
          or 5 Sip ports

If you choose to allocate 1 DSP for SIP, you can attach 5 SIP devices or streams. If you only have 1 SIP device, then you will allocating a single DSP for the SIP stream, since you can't allocate a partial DSP. It's all or nothing.

I have ALOT of buildings I've installed with CAT 5/6 ONLY. I still attach fax machines as analog devices. I just make a custom cable, an RJ11 with a RJ45 jack for the wall connector. Cable is cable...think outside the box.

Has anyone ever set up any type of ATA in the Shoretel 6 environment?

I agree with Charles, we cable RJ45 data jacks everywhere and simply convert using a custom cable when analog is needed. Be sure to label the jacks well when they are analog. Heck, an RJ11 cable will even fit in the middle of an RJ45 jack if you need a quick solution.

That works great...if you have a switch in that building. But if you don't have a phone switch in that building, you need an ata.

                    Most Common

Having an ATA is most common in offices.
