  • Faxes calling extensions.

I know you can have faxes redirected from a users did or extension to a fax machine, but what actually happens? Does the phone ring, and after teh user picks up, it automatically transfers? Does it do this in teh background (and the phone never rings)? Do you have to press some digits to send it to the fax extension?

The call has to be answered for the redirection to occur. Either the user needs to pick up the phone (and in under a second it detects the fax and redirects) or it has to hit voicemail (which then determines it is a fax and redirects). It's not a good option for someone who is a heavy fax user as their phone will be constantly ringing and they have to either answer or let it go to voicemail.

        fax

I set up an auto attendent for each users DID. The aa answers and the sends the call to either the users phone extention or the faxserver. Works great.

A potential issue with this deployment model is that you lose direct access to users if the HQ server goes down. All callers will hear the Backup AA instead of ringing straight through to the user extension.

You could use route points to get around that liability.
