  • Wow, what a stupid Shoretel Server installer

    I'll probably create a Shoretel ticket for this to complain to them, but I thought I would mention this here as this type of things drives me nuts.

    So I just downloaded the latest 8.0 CR release to upgrade our current 8.0 CR install. The download is a single 1.1 Gig ZIP file. So I downloaded this file directly to our Shoreware server. Of course you need to unzip the file, so I unzip, and low and behold, there are TWO files in the zip. A .PDF file and an .EXE file. So of course I extract them out. So now I have three files, the .PDF, the .EXE and the .ZIP, now totaling 2.2 Gig's on the server. So I run the .EXE file, and it says it is extracting files. I check the local settings\temp directory to see what is going on. Sure enough, it creates a directory and puts four files in there. Three of them are .INI files, and the fourth is a .MSI file that is... 1.1 Gig in size. Lovely. So after extracting this .MSI file from the .EXE, the .MSI then takes over. Well, the .MSI file obviously has some type of command to extract IT'S contents, so it extracts another .MSI file one level down from the temp directory, called "41de37c8.msi", and again, surprise, it is 1.1 Gig in size. Now FINALLY the installer tires to run, and guess what, I HAVE TOO LITTLE DISK SPACE.

    So let's add up how much disk space you need to even run the installer, let alone the installer actually performing the upgrade...

    Shoreware Server.Zip = 1.1 Gig
    Shoreware Server.exe = 1.1 Gig
    Shoreware Server.msi = 1.1 Gig
    41de37c8.msi = 1.1 Gig
    Total to Install = 4.4 Gig + before the installer even upgrades anything.

    Where did you get the Download from?
    [email protected] or ?

    Normally they come in one single .exe file never zipped

    Unless CR folks are zipping them up with the release and server notes, yes I agree a tad over kill

    One other item to note, yes you will need 4.5 plus gigs of free space to install ST8, I believe this is in the Server Requirements for ST8

    I understand the issue you stated though, the unzipping has clogged an artery

      Our biggest complaint is that ShoreTel does not break out the DVS install package. When you are upgrading systems with 4-5 DVS's then it really slows down the upgrade process when you have to download the DVS upgrade package after the HQ server has been upgraded. It would be nice to have the DVS package uploaded to all DVS's even before the upgrade has been started.

      Hopefully ShoreTel has caught onto this because when I downloaded the first 8.1 beta build, the DVS package was available in a separate download.

        Yes, the server requirements do state that it needs 4.5 gigs. The really dumb thing is that it doesn't NEED 4.5 gigs, it is only because of the way they packaged the installer. They could have done it with half of this. The problem is, it is not just the .zip file, it is the .exe file that explodes a .msi, which re-explodes itself as another .msi before the install officially starts. That's 2.2 gig of completely redundant stuff right there.

        As for the .zip, you are correct, it included a .PDF file. And yes, I got the URL from [email protected].

          Yes, they will be splitting this out going forward. We've pushed them on doing this as it will substantially decrease upgrade times for multi-site installations with DVMs.
