  • Quick Look - Reboot Vs. Reset?

    Hello,

I'm running ST v.8.0 CR. On my quick look page, when I view my switches (I have all SG-50's and T1's) I have the Restart options AND the Reboot options. I have searched the forums and the shoretel support site, but I can't find anywhere that distinguishes between these two? In fact, most literature seems to indicate just one or the other. I'm starting to think that both options do the same thing?

So, anyone know if Restart is any different than Reboot? Is this just a little bug in v.8.0 CR? Should there be only one or the other but no both?

    What build of Shoretel?

are you describing the T1 Chanels for Reset as compared to the SG50 Reboot?

If this helps, depending on what your looking at

Reboot will functionally shut the SG down and do a Hard Restart of the SG
Reset is depending on your T1 CHannels

Can you provide a screen shot of your question?

      Re

I think he is referring to the quick look screen and drill down to the switches. In the drop down list for action for the switch there is now an option to restart the switch or reboot the switch.

Figured as much, just wanted clarification,

I believe it is just a way it is worded for example

Reset , Reset when Idle or Reboot

Reset and Reboot I will say do exactly the same thing accept Reboot is a Hard Reboot (Meaning All Lights off then on) while reset is a soft reboot, not disconnecting the link layer 1 (Thats my quess) I will also guess you wont get a straight or a timely answer from ST (Although it is a good question)

Reset when Idle is self explaining. Either way, you do not want to hit either of them on a live system, with out letting everyone know.

          Thanks

That's about what I figured. I guess I'll just have to walk down to the server room to find out for myself.

For me, if I'm going to reset, might as well be a hard reset (aka reboot) so I'm not sure why they even have the two options?

I'm guessing because a restart is faster than a reboot, though that is just me guessing.

About to give the ole' reboot to one of ours that's acting up.

I think the reboot and restart came about for the V-switches, which run linux. Restarting takes the switch down to the linux base and and reboot is just for the ShoreTel application level. So it doesn't matter if you reboot or restart the typical SG switches it does the same for both, because they don't run linux.
