  • New Wireless Install!

No Questions, just a report. We have a Shoretel system with about 40 phones. We recently opened a new building about a half mile down the road that we needed linked to our existing network and phones. We are a non-profit with a very small budget. Fiber was out of our price range. We looked into laying Cat5 with a booster/extender from Patton (rated 16megabit at 1 mile), but that was also fairly expensive. We decided to try out a wireless link. It has been running about a week now with no problems. We used Tranzeo radios with tree-penetrating antennas. It was a bridge bundle from company on the web. On the performance console of the Tranzeo, I can watch how its doing and it maintains a 54mb connection (dropping down to 48mb for a few seconds every once in awhile). Ping times to the Shoretel phones in that building from my office here are less than 3 ms.

    Total equipment involved:
    • (2) Tranzeo 6600f Transceivers
    • (2) 14dBi Circular Polarized Directional Antennas (funky looking)
    • (1) Cheap Netgear FS726TB PoE Switch (to power Shoretel phones)

We spent about $1,100 on the equipment. So far we only have 3 phones in that building, but everything is working great! I don't have a lot of experience and haven't done any QoS or VLAN segregation. Things are good so far, but will look into that if we experience any problems as we open more offices up in that building. Thanks for all of your help and advice guys!

    Congrats.
    Our Shoretel wireless successes:
#1: 155 user, 3 locations, avg 8 miles apart, connected via Wireless PTP (motorola I believe). 10mb connection NLS (near line of site)

#2: 145 Users, 2 locations 1 mile apart, Connected via Wireless PTP (not sure of brand) line of site, 54mbps

Very cool. We were doing the same thing with a building a block away and had very good luck.

One thing to be very careful of is Tranzeo's support and RMA process. Hands down by a mile, the worst support ever. One of our transceivers died 4 months ago and they wanted us to test it (even though it wouldn't even power on) for a week before they'd issue an RMA. How do you test something that doesn't power up? Anyway, they've had it this whole time and we still haven't received a replacement or the original repaired unit back even after several phone calls. They are still 'testing' it on their end. Make absolutely sure you buy an extra transceiver if that connection is mission critical.

Wow, 155 users at 8 miles apart! And I was stressed out that our setup might not work!

We are currently running with 84 users over a Alvarion BreezeNet DS.11 PTP Wireless.

With QoS enabled we seem to be doing just fine, though I haven't tested to see the actual capacity yet.

We're a WISP as well, so all of our Shoretel multi-site users are going across wireless. There's nothing inherent in wireless that prevents VOIP, so long as high standards are met.

Just a phenomenal way to prove how a great network will enhance the ShoreTel Experience.

I know the thread is old, but can you all say what wireless handsets you are using? We are looking to install 2 handsets, but cannot locate the i75, WIP330 or IP5000 at our regular distributors.

Your best bet is to stick with what is certified by ShoreTel unfortunately. Support will be impossible to none for non certified equipment. the Hitachi IP5000 can be found almost anywhere Google Links

Just down load the Application note form ShoreTel and FOLLOW IT TO THE LETTER -- DO NOT DEVIATE ONE ITEM and you will have a working system
