Hi All,
We have an IP230 in an alignment shop which is barely heard at it's loudest volume. Based on suggestions in this forum, I ordered the Viking Paging Horn Model 25AE. I did have to go get a spool of wire and a solder pen. I was only able to find 16GA wire when the speaker wire inside is 24GA, but better thicker than thinner. I removed the back cover and the first circuit board. This exposed the black wires going from the board to the speaker. I shaved back enough on both wires to solder leads to each so I could keep the existing speaker wire intact.
I then ran the two new wires around the board and out the back "vent?" holes in the top of the phone so I didn't have to modify the phone itself. Re-mount the circuit board and back cover, and viola! Wired the amp box, AC, and horn. Mounted the horn and now I can adjust the volume both at the amp box AND the phone. This was an EXCELLENT solution for about $75. Saved us having to use up an analog port (IF WE HAD ONE AVIALABLE) or buy another switch (YIKES $$$$$).
The only caveat is I put a label on the phone NOT NOT NOT to use the speakerphone. Now that the signal is amped across that line, any dialing or talking with come through the Viking. Otherwise, it works like a CHARM!
I made a recommendation to our rep to pass along to Shoretel. There's enough room inside those IP phone cases to split that speaker wire and mount an external 3.5mm Stereo jack. This would keep the warranty intact and allow the customer to wire up an external amp and horn without spending SERIOUS money or give up an analog port and programming time just to amplify the ringer.
Best,
D
